What are the best unified APIs for HRIS integrations?
Comparing eight leading unified APIs on HRIS coverage, data model depth, field mapping, data freshness and security.
A unified HRIS API gives you one data model and one set of endpoints across many HR systems. There are eight providers competing in the space in 2026: Kombo, Merge, Finch, Nango, Apideck, Bindbee, Knit, and Unified.
What are the best integration providers for HRIS integrations?
What is a unified HRIS API?
A unified HRIS API gives you one set of endpoints and one data model that read and write people data across many HR systems. You integrate once, and the provider handles authentication, schema normalization, and ongoing maintenance for every system in its catalog. The benefit is that adding coverage for a new HRIS becomes a configuration change rather than a custom project.
Buyers also describe this category as an HRIS integration provider, an HRIS integration platform, or HR middleware. These terms overlap but are not identical things - the next section separates them.
What is the difference between a unified API, embedded iPaaS, and middleware for HRIS?
Integration middleware has different product architectures, so let’s break down the differences first.
| Approach | Examples | What it solves | Where it breaks for HRIS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unified API | Kombo, Merge, Finch, Apideck, Bindbee, Knit, Unified.to | One normalized schema across many HR systems, the vendor maintains connectors | You inherit the vendor’s data model unless it offers a transform layer |
| Code-first integration platform | Nango | Full control over models and sync logic, in your git repo | You implement and maintain the mapping logic per system |
| Embedded iPaaS / middleware | Workato Embedded, Prismatic, Paragon, Tray Embedded | Customer-facing workflow orchestration and automation builders | Solves orchestration, not normalization. You still have to model Workday vs. SuccessFactors vs. UKG yourself, per connector |
| Auth and directory infrastructure | WorkOS | SSO, SCIM directory sync, user provisioning | SCIM gives you a thin user directory, without employments, absences, org structure, compensation or performance data |
For HRIS specifically, the hard part is typically not moving data, it is normalizing it. Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, and UKG each model employment, org structure, and absence differently, and each customer configures them differently again. Generic middleware and iPaaS tools give you a pipe and leave the modeling to you. A unified API is worth paying for when scaling coverage across systems (and tenants) is the bottleneck.
How should you read this unified HRIS API comparison?
Kombo builds a unified API for people data, so we have an interest in the outcome. We have tried to make that useful rather than disqualifying by stating plainly where Kombo is the wrong choice, and by date-stamping the page so you know how current the numbers are. We sourced all information on this page from each provider’s public website and documentation on September 16, 2026.
Articles have already covered this, but most are written from the unified APIs’ point of view. The dimensions below are the ones we have seen technical product and engineering leaders actually use in evaluations.
How should you evaluate a unified HRIS API for HRIS integrations?
(1) Integration coverage: How many integrations does the provider actually offer, how many are genuinely API-based, and does it cover the systems your customers use? Most leaders also check experience with enterprise systems like Workday and SAP SuccessFactors, and whether the provider holds certified partnerships.
(2) Data model depth across read and write: Which objects you can read and write back - including employees, employments, org structures, time and attendance, performance, skills, and payroll.
(3) Field mapping capabilities: Many HRIS use cases depend on data your customers keep in custom fields, outside the normalized model. Most unified APIs let you map these. Only a few let you transform them into the shape your product expects; the rest push that logic back into your backend.
(4) Developer experience and support: Sandbox availability, automatic issue detection, logs and observability for debugging, SDKs, documentation quality, and the level and experience of support.
(5) Data freshness: Whether the architecture is built on webhooks, scheduled syncs, or live pass-through, and what that implies. Also whether the sync schedule can be adjusted, and whether deletions are detected.
(6) Security and auditability: Where data is hosted, which certifications the provider holds, whether you can scope data access, and whether audit logs are available.
How many HRIS integrations does each provider really offer, and are they API-based, assisted, or file-based?
The headline integration count is the most-quoted and least-comparable number in this category. Providers count different things.
- API-based: the provider connects through the HR system’s public or partner API. Sync is automated and typically runs on a schedule or on webhooks.
- Assisted or scripted: an operations team or script logs into the system using your customer’s credentials to retrieve data. This unlocks systems with no API, at the cost of latency and a different security posture.
- File-based / SFTP: data arrives as scheduled file drops. Reliable once running, but often involves weeks of employer-side setup.
| Provider (with link to integration catalog) | Total HRIS systems listed | API-based HRIS integrations | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kombo | 85 | 85 | All API-based |
| Merge | 80 | 80 | A large share are labeled beta, so verify per system |
| Finch | 260 | 38 | 222 systems are human-assisted |
| Nango | 47 | 47 | 900+ APIs across 30 categories, but unified models are built by you |
| Apideck | 59 | 59 | Catalog says 59+, part of 200+ connectors across seven categories |
| Bindbee | 54 | 50 | Bindbee lists 54 HRIS systems, of which 50 are API-based. Several connections like isolved are SFTP-based only |
| Knit | 66 | 66 | Part of around 200 systems across 13 categories |
| Unified.to | 58 | 48 | Lists 427 entries under HR and Directory, but most are not HRIS, for example Asana |
Counts on this page include only HRIS integrations backed by a public or partner API, verified on September 16, 2026. Assisted, scripted and file-based connections are excluded.
Which are the best unified APIs for HRIS integrations in 2026?
The leading unified APIs for HRIS in 2026 are Kombo, Merge, Finch, Nango, Apideck, Knit, Bindbee, and Unified.to. Below is an overview of all providers, with an objective assessment across the six dimensions that product and engineering leaders typically score them on.
1. Kombo - best for deep read and write coverage across enterprise HRIS
Who is Kombo best for?
Teams selling into US, EU, and global enterprises that need deep read and write coverage across core HR data, skills, performance reviews, payroll, and org structures, plus advanced field transformation capabilities.
Which HRIS systems does Kombo cover?
Kombo offers 85 API-based HRIS integrations, with certified partnerships with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM and UKG, and listings in the SAP, Oracle and UKG marketplaces. Kombo covers the major enterprise systems including Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, ADP Workforce Now, UKG Pro, UKG Ready, UKG Pro WFM, Dayforce and ADP Decidium.
Kombo covers Gusto and Rippling, as well as Paychex, plus multiple ADP systems (notably ADP Workforce Now and ADP Decidium) - but it currently misses some mid-market systems like Paychex Flex, QuickBooks, and isolved.
How deep is Kombo’s HRIS data model?
Kombo offers 18 normalized HRIS objects. Read coverage spans employees, employments, legal entities, groups, locations, staffing entities, absences, absence types, time off balances, timesheets, performance review cycles and reviews, skills, and employee documents. Org structures are first-class objects with stable IDs and relations rather than string arrays, which matters if you build hierarchy features.
Kombo also provides the most mature employee-writing abstraction in the market across 36 systems, with absences on 34, full CRUD on skills and employee skill assignments, and document upload. Kombo has no write coverage for pay statements, deductions, or time-and-attendance data.
Can Kombo map and transform custom fields?
Kombo offers the most advanced capabilities alongside Merge. Custom fields and integration fields are exposed, remote data returns the raw payload, and advanced mappings let you write a TypeScript function to transform data. A no-code version of the same mapping layer is coming, letting implementation and support teams handle mappings without shipping code.
How good is Kombo’s developer experience and support?
Kombo ships three SDK languages and built-in sandbox instances for most major systems. Observability covers five log types (sync, connection flow, action, pass-through and incoming webhook) with 90-day retention, and connection flow logs grouped by end-user session so you can replay one customer’s failed setup. Data Explorer lets you read any field and run any write action from a no-code UI inside the dashboard.
Kombo provides support in West Coast, East Coast, and European time zones through shared Slack channels with the engineers who built the connectors, included on every plan rather than enterprise-only. Kombo is also the only provider offering an AI support agent for account-specific questions. It also lets you use all integrations via MCP.
How fresh is Kombo’s HRIS data?
Kombo pairs webhooks with a scheduled sync that always runs underneath them. When an upstream system emits webhooks, Kombo consumes them and propagates changes as they arrive. Many HR systems don’t emit them, or emit them unreliably, so the scheduled sync runs every three hours by default and down to five minutes on higher plans. Kombo tracks deletions, and the force-sync endpoint runs full or delta syncs on demand when you need a specific customer reconciled immediately.
How secure is Kombo?
Kombo holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and HIPAA, and complies with GDPR. Data is hosted in isolated US and EU regions, with Canada supported from October 2026. Field-level scopes null out anything outside scope at sync time, so out-of-scope data never lands in the database. The dashboard includes audit logs, role-based access control and SAML SSO. Synced data is deleted automatically within 14 days once it is no longer needed.
Watch out:
Kombo covers only people-related categories - HRIS, ATS, LMS, payroll and assessment. If you need broader coverage across CRM, accounting or ticketing, Merge, Apideck, Knit, or Nango will serve you better. It’s also more focused on mid-market and enterprise HRIS, covering systems like ADP WFN, UKG Pro and Ready, and Rippling.
Which customers use Kombo for HRIS integrations?
Wellhub, Indeed Flex, Greenhouse, Workera
2. Merge - best for HRIS read, enterprise coverage, and several unrelated integration categories from one vendor
Who is Merge best for?
Products that need HRIS read, enterprise coverage, and several unrelated integration categories from one vendor.
Which HRIS systems does Merge cover?
Merge offers 80 API-based HRIS integrations as part of 220+ integrations across eight categories. Merge holds certified partnerships with enterprise systems including Workday, Rippling, Gusto and UKG. A fair share of Merge’s HRIS integrations are labeled beta, so check the specific systems your customers use before committing.
How deep is Merge’s HRIS data model?
Merge is a strong read platform for HRIS, covering 15 normalized HRIS models with read coverage across payroll runs, absences, benefits, bank info, timesheets and time off. Merge does not offer write capabilities for employees, performance, skills, staffing entities or payroll data.
Can Merge map and transform custom fields?
Merge provides the most mature mapping capabilities alongside Kombo. Merge offers field mapping at both the organization and connected-integration level, shows coverage percentage per integration, and its advanced mapping transforms remote data with JSONata.
How good is Merge’s developer experience and support?
Merge has built mature tooling with searchable logs, automated issue detection, and an endpoint for token management and issue retrieval. Log retention is 30 days on Professional and 90+ on Enterprise. Support routes through a general queue, and Slack channels and onboarding support are enterprise-tier only.
How fresh is Merge’s HRIS data?
Merge syncs from hourly to every 24 hours depending on plan.
How secure is Merge?
Merge holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and HIPAA, and is GDPR compliant. Merge offers hosting in the US, EU and APAC plus a single-tenant option, the broadest residency set here, and provides audit trails in the dashboard and via API.
Watch out:
Merge is pivoting toward LLM routing and internal integration use cases, and the unified HRIS API is no longer its main focus. Merge’s changelog suggests most new product features now target the Merge Gateway and Agent Handler products, whereas the unified HRIS API mostly receives maintenance fixes.
Which customers use Merge for HRIS integrations?
Ramp, Navan, Foxit, Drata
3. Finch - best for US payroll depth and long-tail coverage
Who is Finch best for?
US retirement, benefits and insurance use cases that need pay-statement detail and payroll write-back, and for reaching HRIS and payroll systems that have no API at all.
Which HRIS systems does Finch cover?
Finch lists 260 HRIS and payroll systems, of which 38 are API-based. The remainder are human-assisted, meaning an operations team logs into the system on your customer’s behalf to retrieve data. This unlocks systems such as Xenium HR and PayNorthwest that offer no API, which no pure API aggregator can reach.
How deep is Finch’s HRIS data model?
Narrow, but the deepest payroll model in this set. Finch read coverage spans company, directory, individual, employment, payment and pay statement, with line-item earnings, taxes, deductions and contributions. Benefits and deductions are read and write across a stated 25+ providers, though only around five are automated. Finch offers no time off, no attendance, no performance, no skills, no general document handling and no core HR write. Departments and locations return as arrays on the company object with no IDs or relations, so you cannot build a reliable org tree from them.
Can Finch map and transform custom fields?
The weakest in this set. Finch provides raw data for API-based integrations only, with no unified custom-field or transform layer, so all normalization of customer-specific fields lives in your code.
How good is Finch’s developer experience and support?
Finch offers the broadest SDK list here - JavaScript and React on the frontend, and Node, Python, Java, Kotlin, Go and Ruby on the backend. Finch provides two sandbox modes, one with simulated data and one connecting to up to five live provider demo accounts. Assisted functionality is not supported in the sandbox, so you cannot test the majority of the catalog end to end.
How fresh is Finch’s HRIS data?
Finch API integrations sync every 24 hours by default and weekly on some systems. Assisted integrations take up to seven days. The assisted model is a genuine differentiator, but the sync schedule may not be frequent enough for compliance-sensitive use cases such as spend management.
How secure is Finch?
Finch holds SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR and CCPA. ISO 27001 is not listed on their security page. Finch hosts in the US only, which is simple if all your customers are US-based and a blocker if they are not. The larger consideration is the assisted model, where a human operations team holds and uses credentials to your customers’ payroll data.
Watch out:
Check per system whether an integration is API-based or assisted before scoping anything. Finch offers almost no HR data outside payroll and benefits and has no field-mapping capabilities.
Which customers use Finch for HRIS integrations?
Brex, Coinbase, Morningstar, Vanta
4. Nango - best for teams that want to define their own unified data models rather than accept a vendor schema
Who is Nango best for?
Teams that see integrations as a core part of their product, and have the engineering bandwidth to build out integrations on top of Nango.
Which HRIS systems does Nango cover?
Nango supports 900+ APIs across 30 categories. Unlike the other providers here, Nango does not ship a pre-built HRIS unified model - you define the schema and mapping logic yourself, per provider, in your own repository.
How deep is Nango’s HRIS data model?
Fully user-defined. Nango provides the connectivity, authentication, and sync infrastructure, but you build and maintain the normalization.
Can Nango map and transform custom fields?
Not available as a product feature. There is no vendor schema to map onto, so selecting, renaming and transforming fields is code you write and maintain yourself, per provider. That per-provider mapping work is the expensive part of HRIS integration, and with Nango it stays with your team.
How good is Nango’s developer experience and support?
Real-time request and response logging, OpenTelemetry export, open-source core, self-hosting on enterprise, a native MCP server, and first-class support for AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor.
How fresh is Nango’s HRIS data?
You can configure this per sync yourself.
How secure is Nango?
Nango is SOC 2 Type II certified, GDPR compliant, and HIPAA compliant, but does not hold the ISO 27001 certification.
Watch out:
Nango requires you to understand each underlying HRIS API. AI coding agents may reduce the initial build, but Workday and SAP SuccessFactors edge cases surface over months of production traffic, not during the first build.
Which customers use Nango for HRIS integrations?
AllVoices, Electric.ai
5. Apideck - best for shallow HRIS read with live pass-through
Who is Apideck best for?
Products that need HRIS read across several software categories and can live without change detection.
Which HRIS systems does Apideck cover?
Apideck offers 59 HRIS connectors as part of 200+ connectors across seven categories including CRM, accounting, ATS and file storage. Apideck does not publish relevant enterprise HCM partnerships, and enterprise depth is not a focus.
How deep is Apideck’s HRIS data model?
Shallow compared with the other platforms here. Apideck covers employees, companies, departments, payrolls, time-off requests, and employee schedules. Employee and time-off writes are documented, but support varies by connector, so validate per system. Apideck does not cover time-off balances, performance, skills, staffing entities, or payroll data.
Can Apideck map and transform custom fields?
Apideck configures custom field mapping through its connection UI, and Data Scopes restrict which fields it requests. It covers renaming and selecting fields but does not run transform logic, so anything conditional stays in your code.
How good is Apideck’s developer experience and support?
Apideck ships SDKs in TypeScript, Python, PHP, Java, Go, and C#, plus a CLI for querying connectors from a terminal. Sandbox OAuth apps are enabled by default. API Logs include latency analytics, error alerts, and one-click request replay.
How fresh is Apideck’s HRIS data?
Every Apideck call hits the underlying system live, so data is never stale. The tradeoff shows on enterprise instances: your read latency is the provider’s latency, upstream rate limits become your rate limits, and there is no change detection or deletion tracking, so you cannot ask what changed since yesterday. Virtual webhooks simulate change events by polling.
How secure is Apideck?
Apideck holds SOC 2 Type II and is GDPR compliant, but does not seem to hold ISO 27001, and hosts in the EU exclusively.
Watch out:
No stored data means no change detection, no historical state and no replay of what a system looked like last week. Apideck pricing has historically been per API call, which couples your infrastructure bill to your read patterns.
Which customers use Apideck for HRIS integrations?
Kadonation, Setyl, Workwize
6. Bindbee - best for early-stage teams and the Indian market
Who is Bindbee best for?
Early-stage teams with straightforward HRIS read needs, or products focused on the Indian market.
Which HRIS systems does Bindbee cover?
Bindbee offers 50 API-based HRIS integrations out of 54 listed, alongside 12 ATS integrations. Bindbee has not established enterprise HCM partnerships, and there is no public evidence of a meaningful track record with Workday or SAP SuccessFactors deployments. Bindbee does offer strong coverage in the Indian market, including Darwinbox, Keka and PeopleStrong.
How deep is Bindbee’s HRIS data model?
Bindbee covers 16 normalized HRIS objects, mostly read-oriented - employees, employments, groups, locations, time off, balances, timesheets, payroll runs and benefits. Bindbee documents write coverage for employees, payslips, timesheets, and time off but does not specify per-system coverage, so verify directly.
Can Bindbee map and transform custom fields?
Bindbee provides custom field mapping in its dashboard and programmatically via API. There is no documented transform layer, so all conditional logic lives in your code.
How good is Bindbee’s developer experience and support?
A sync status dashboard shows which end customers are affected when something breaks. Documentation is thinner than Merge’s or Kombo’s, and with a small team you should expect gaps in less common systems.
How fresh is Bindbee’s HRIS data?
Scheduled, 24 hours by default, adjustable on higher tiers.
How secure is Bindbee?
Bindbee holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and HIPAA, and is GDPR compliant. Bindbee offers on-premise and multi-geography hosting, which no other provider here offers.
Watch out:
Smallest verified integration count with unclear write coverage and with a team based in Bangalore, expect support gaps during US time zones.
Which customers use Bindbee for HRIS integrations?
Healthee, Cypherworx, Clever Benefits, Compport
7. Knit - best for a stateless, webhook-only architecture
Who is Knit best for?
Products that want a stateless architecture and need broad coverage across many unrelated integration categories.
Which HRIS systems does Knit cover?
Knit offers 66 API-based HRIS integrations and around 200 systems across 13 categories. Knit does not publish enterprise HCM partnerships. Knit’s claim of adding coverage for unsupported systems in two days should be treated with caution, as production-grade enterprise integrations typically take weeks to build and to surface edge cases.
How deep is Knit’s HRIS data model?
Knit leans payroll- and accounting-heavy, covering employees, payroll, leave, attendance, compensation, documents, terminations and deductions. Coverage varies by system, so check Knit’s HRIS documentation for the systems that matter to you.
Can Knit map and transform custom fields?
Knit exposes custom fields as readable. There is no dedicated transform or mapping product, so all normalization happens on your side.
How good is Knit’s developer experience and support?
Knit does not ship backend SDKs in any language. You get a Postman collection and a React component for the connect flow. Proactive issue detection is included, but extended log retention requires the Scale Up plan.
How fresh is Knit’s HRIS data?
Fully webhook-based and stateless, with nothing cached on Knit’s side. Where the upstream system does not emit events, you are on Knit’s polling cadence, which is daily on the entry plan and adjustable on higher plans.
How secure is Knit?
Knit holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 and is GDPR compliant, with AES-256 at rest. Knit is not HIPAA certified, which rules it out for some US health-adjacent use cases. Multi-region hosting and SAML SSO are enterprise-only.
Watch out:
No backend SDKs, no HIPAA, and coverage varies strongly per operation. With its HQ in Bangalore, Knit’s support coverage for US time zones may be patchy.
Which customers use Knit for HRIS integrations?
Scrut Automation, Multiplier, Payoneer Workforce Management, RazorpayX Payroll
8. Unified.to - best for unusually broad category coverage
Who is Unified.to best for?
Products that need HR data alongside many unrelated categories - CRM, accounting, messaging, file storage and calendars.
Which HRIS systems does Unified.to cover?
Unified.to offers 700+ integrations across 32+ categories. HR coverage sits in a combined HR and Directory bucket of 427 entries, but that is a directory bucket rather than an HRIS catalog: 58 of those entries are HRIS systems, and 48 of them are API-based. Unified.to publishes no partnerships or sandbox access for Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM or UKG.
How deep is Unified.to’s HRIS data model?
Unified.to covers 14 normalized HRIS models, with reads across employees, groups, teams, locations and time off, absences on 48 integrations, and benefits, bank account and deduction models on 11 integrations. Staffing entity coverage stops at groups, teams and locations, so there are no legal entity or cost center objects, and there are no skills or performance models at all.
Can Unified.to map and transform custom fields?
The weakest in this set alongside Finch. Custom fields from the underlying provider APIs are not accessible, there is no rename or transform layer, and no per-customer mapping, so every customer-specific field has to be handled in your own backend.
How good is Unified.to’s developer experience and support?
Unified.to ships pre-built authorization components for React, Angular, Vue, Svelte and plain JavaScript. Observability tooling is limited; there is no built-in sandbox, and there is no trace of dedicated Slack channels, dedicated support engineers, or implementation support.
How fresh is Unified.to’s HRIS data?
Live pass-through with zero data at rest, so data is never stale and every read is a metered call against the provider’s rate limit. Unified.to ships Database Sync so you can persist records on your own side for high-volume reads. There is no deletion tracking and no last-known-state fallback when the upstream system has an outage, so retry and backoff logic stays in your code.
How secure is Unified.to?
Unified.to holds SOC 2 Type II and states HIPAA and GDPR compliance, but does not hold ISO 27001. Data residency covers the US, EU and AU - one of the broadest residency sets here.
Watch out:
HRIS depth is thin relative to the category count, and the maintenance load of 700+ integrations across four engineers is the structural risk: HR systems ship breaking changes and enforce tenant-specific rate limits, and in a pass-through model those surface in your product.
Which customers use Unified.to for HRIS integrations?
Humi, MyHub, Mycroft
Which adjacent providers come up in HRIS integration evaluations?
These sit next to unified HRIS APIs in evaluations but solve different problems.
- WorkOS - WorkOS solves enterprise access rather than HR data: Directory Sync normalizes users and groups from dozens of identity providers and HRIS systems over SCIM, alongside SSO, RBAC and audit logs. WorkOS does not model employments, absences, compensation, performance or org structure, and is typically priced per connection, so it sits alongside a unified HRIS API rather than replacing one.
- Payroll connectors (Pay(k)onnect, Payroll Integrations) - These are managed data pipelines for the retirement and benefits world rather than self-service developer APIs. Both usually require the employer to authorize the connection or sign a separate contract, with onboarding measured in weeks to months, and neither exposes a general-purpose HRIS data model, so they complement a unified API rather than replace one.

Which unified HRIS API should you choose?
You need deep HRIS read and write across core HR, org structures, skills and performance, for US and European enterprises: Kombo. Deepest normalized object model in this set, code-level field transformation, certified enterprise partnerships, three-hour default sync configurable to five minutes, and isolated US and EU hosting.
You need HRIS read plus CRM, accounting or ticketing from one vendor: Merge. Broadest category coverage with mature mapping and the widest data residency options. Accept that HRIS write is unavailable and that HRIS is no longer the company’s main investment area.
You are building 401(k), benefits, insurance, or retirement products for the US: Finch. The only provider here with line-item pay statements and payroll deduction write-back, plus assisted coverage of systems that have no API.
Integrations are your core product and you have engineers to spend on them: Nango. Custom unified models in code, full observability, and self-hosting. Every HRIS model, field mapping and write path is one you build and maintain yourself.
You need live pass-through and no stored data: Apideck or Unified.to for their zero data retention posture.
You are early-stage, budget-constrained, or focused on India: Bindbee.
You want a stateless webhook architecture across many categories: Knit. Confirm HIPAA is not a requirement first.
You need SSO and user provisioning rather than HR data: WorkOS. If all you need is a user directory, a unified HRIS API is more than you need.
How to run the evaluation yourself
Whatever this page concludes, verify these seven questions with every vendor you speak to:
- Which specific systems support the reads and writes I need? Show me the per-system list, not the model.
- Can I transform a field, or only select one? Will that require engineering, or can my CS and operations teams handle it?
- How many of your HRIS integrations are backed by a public API, and how many are assisted, scripted or file-based?
- What is the default sync cadence on my plan, what does faster cost, and how do you detect deletions?
- When a source field starts throttling, who handles the backoff?
- Can I reproduce a customer’s failed write in your dashboard without deploying code?
- Do you have a partnership and sandbox for Workday and SAP SuccessFactors, and can I have access this week?
Frequently asked questions
What are the best unified APIs for HRIS integrations?
The leading unified APIs for HRIS integrations in 2026 are Kombo, Merge, Finch, Nango, Apideck, Bindbee, Knit, and Unified.to. Kombo offers the deepest normalized HRIS model with read and write coverage, Merge offers the broadest category range, and Finch offers the deepest US payroll data. The right choice depends on which systems your customers use and how deep your data needs go.
Which unified API has the most API-based HRIS integrations?
Kombo has the most API-based HRIS integrations at 85, followed by Merge with 80, Knit with 66, Apideck with 59, Bindbee with 50, Unified.to with 48, Nango with 47 and Finch with 38. Finch lists 260 HRIS and payroll systems in total, but 222 of those are human-assisted rather than API-based.
Which unified API is the best for SMB?
Finch has the best coverage of SMB systems through their assisted integrations.
What is the best middleware for integrating with my customers’ HRIS?
For customer-facing HRIS integrations, a unified API is usually a better fit than general-purpose middleware or embedded iPaaS. Middleware tools such as Workato Embedded, Prismatic and Paragon solve workflow orchestration, but leave you to model each HR system’s schema yourself. A unified API such as Kombo or Merge normalizes Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG and others into a single data model, which is the expensive part of HRIS integration work.
Which unified APIs support writing data back to an HRIS?
Kombo offers the broadest HRIS write coverage, with employee creation and updates across 36 systems, absences across 34, full CRUD on skills, and document upload. Apideck, Bindbee, Knit and Unified.to document employee write with varying per-connector support. Finch supports payroll deduction and contribution write-back. Merge does not offer HRIS write, and Nango ships no pre-built write model, so every write path is one you build yourself.
Which unified APIs support Workday and SAP SuccessFactors?
Kombo holds certified partnerships with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM and UKG, and provides sandbox instances and first-class org tree objects for Workday and SuccessFactors. Merge holds certified partnerships with Workday, Rippling, Gusto, and UKG, and Finch holds a certified partnership with UKG. The rest do not hold certified partnerships.
Does Kombo support payroll data?
Kombo returns compensation and pay rate data but does not return line-item pay statements with earnings, taxes and deductions, and payroll write support is on the roadmap for Q4 2026. For compensation benchmarking, workforce planning and HR analytics use cases, Kombo’s compensation model is sufficient. For 401(k), benefits administration and retirement recordkeeping, Finch offers deeper payroll data.
How does Kombo compare to Merge?
Kombo and Merge both offer mature field mapping and enterprise partnerships. Kombo covers 18 normalized HRIS objects with broad write support and focuses exclusively on people data. Merge covers 15 HRIS models with read only, across eight categories including CRM and accounting. Choose Kombo for HRIS depth and write-back; choose Merge if you need several unrelated categories from one vendor.
How does Kombo compare to Finch?
Kombo offers 85 API-based HRIS integrations with 18 normalized objects, broad write support, org structures, skills and performance data, and isolated US and EU hosting. Finch offers 38 API-based integrations plus 222 human-assisted ones, with line-item payroll data and deduction write-back, hosted in the US only. Choose Kombo for HR data breadth and enterprise HRIS, choose Finch for US payroll depth.
How does Kombo compare to Nango?
Kombo provides pre-built normalized HRIS models that work on day one, with field transformation available as TypeScript functions when you need to go beyond the schema. Nango provides infrastructure for building your own unified models in code across 900+ APIs, with no pre-built HRIS model. Choose Kombo when you need HRIS integrations shipped quickly; choose Nango when integrations are your core product and you have engineers dedicated to them.
How does Kombo compare to Bindbee?
Kombo offers 85 API-based HRIS integrations with certified enterprise partnerships and code-level field transformation. Bindbee offers 50 API-based HRIS integrations out of 54 listed, with strong Indian market coverage, on-premise hosting and lower pricing, but no enterprise HCM partnerships and no documented transform layer.
How does Kombo compare to Unified.to?
Kombo offers 85 API-based HRIS integrations with 18 normalized objects, custom field access and code-level field transformation. Unified.to offers 48 API-based HRIS integrations inside a much broader catalog of 700+ integrations across 32+ categories, with 14 HRIS models, no custom field access and no transform layer. Choose Kombo for HRIS depth and per-customer mapping; choose Unified.to if you need HR data alongside many unrelated categories and depth is not the priority.
Is Kombo only for European companies?
No. Kombo operates offices in New York and Berlin, runs an isolated US data region, is listed in the SAP, Oracle and UKG marketplaces, and holds certified partnerships with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM and UKG. Kombo provides support across West Coast, East Coast and European time zones on every plan, and is working with leading US enterprises such as Indeed Flex, Wellhub, and Greenhouse for HRIS integrations.
How often should HRIS data sync?
It depends on the use case. Access provisioning and deprovisioning need near-real-time updates, so a three-hour or faster cadence with webhook support matters. Compensation benchmarking and workforce analytics tolerate daily syncs. Kombo defaults to three hours and can be configured to five minutes; Merge ranges from hourly to daily by plan; Finch, Bindbee and Knit default to 24 hours; Apideck and Unified.to read live on every call.
Why isn’t Truto in the comparison?
Truto is a legitimate company in this space and worth mentioning. We excluded it from the ranked comparison because Truto positions itself as complementary to a unified HRIS API rather than a direct alternative: see Truto’s integration stack with Kombo. Truto instead offers adjacent integration categories such as accounting and scheduling.
