The Challenge

TestGorilla is the global talent discovery platform that helps employers source and hire based on proven skills. With a pool of 2m+ skills-tested candidates, 350+ science-backed assessments, and AI-powered sourcing and evaluation, they give organizations a faster, fairer, and smarter way to hire. More than 60,000 organizations have used TestGorilla, and the platform now assesses 7 million candidates annually.

ATS integrations are key to how customers use their platform. When a recruiter moves a candidate to an assessment stage in their ATS, TestGorilla triggers the appropriate tests and delivers results back into the ATS. This allows customers to evaluate candidates without switching tools and disrupting their workflows.

Our customers’ main daily working tool is the ATS. So when they bring us on and the approach of skills-based hiring, it needs to fit well into the ATS.
– Simon Iversen, Director of Product Management & Product Marketing

TestGorilla's engineering team had built a strong foundation in-house with 16 ATS integrations and 700 connected customers. But as their customer base grew quickly and the product team continued launching new assessment types, the maintenance overhead compounded. Each new test format required support across all 16 integrations, and with each ATS handling data differently, custom development work multiplied across the portfolio.

It was always hard to throw more and more resources towards the ATS, because it was quite intensive for any changes we wanted to do.
– Simon Iversen, Director of Product Management & Product Marketing

A strategic choice

This put TestGorilla at a crossroads. Their focus was on further developing their intellectual property and assessment formats, not on integration maintenance. But at the same time, their customer research also clearly showed the business value of integrations:

A successful ATS integration, and by successful I mean valuable for customers, is a core retention driver, and it unlocks larger customers. That's an area we really wanted to focus on - and that takes investment.
– Simon Iversen, Director of Product Management & Product Marketing

TestGorilla's leadership evaluated two paths: scale their integration infrastructure internally, or find a partner with deep assessment expertise.

The Solution

TestGorilla first partnered with Kombo specifically to integrate with Workday and SAP SuccessFactors. After 1.5 years of working together and with their maintenance overhead continuously growing, they then decided to migrate the 700+ customers from their in-house integrations to Kombo's unified API.

Enterprise access without partnership barriers

Kombo provided immediate access to Workday and SAP SuccessFactors, which TestGorilla couldn't access directly, as these platforms had closed their ecosystems to new partners. This was particularly valuable for unlocking deals with large enterprise customers. Next to the integrations, Kombo also provided sandbox access across all major systems and technical support during customer onboardings.

The support from the team is second to none. Kombo works perfectly for our use case.
– Siobhán Comerford, Customer Success Advisor

Assessment-specific expertise

TestGorilla evaluated several integration providers, but chose Kombo for their deep expertise in the assessment space. As the only unified API specializing in assessment integrations, Kombo brought hands-on technical guidance and system-specific expertise - including connection guides for each ATS and detailed walkthroughs for setting up assessment packages.

Structured assessment data delivery

Kombo's assessment integrations enabled TestGorilla to deliver their assessment results in a format that works across ATS. Instead of compressing test scores, completion times, responses and more into notes, results could be structured for each ATS’s assessment module.

How detailed results look within Greenhouse

This was especially impactful for enterprise systems. SAP SuccessFactors, for example, supports structured assessment packages that can display individual test results, sub-scores, and evaluation criteria.

The outcome our users are looking for is that they need to make a shortlisting decision based on results. If the only thing you go by is an overall score, you have almost nothing. With Kombo, we now have the ability to structure these results in a great format
– Simon Iversen, Director of Product Management & Product Marketing

The Outcome

Critical infrastructure with enterprise reliability

The assessment integrations are critical infrastructure for TestGorilla’s platform. This made reliability and support essential criteria in their partner evaluation.

Uptime, trust, certainty - it is absolutely critical infrastructure for us. For the larger ATSs especially, we don't have the in-depth knowledge. We're relying on our partner to have that and support us.
– Simon Iversen, Director of Product Management & Product Marketing

When their customers ask about specific configurations or edge cases, TestGorilla can now tap into Kombo's extensive documentation or get direct answers through a shared Slack channel.

Enterprise customers closed

Kombo’s integration coverage enabled TestGorilla to close enterprise deals that they couldn't have closed otherwise. These enterprise customers represented a strategic segment that required both the integration capability and the operational support to implement complex assessment workflows.

I don't believe we would have been able to close the customers we have on the SuccessFactors and Workday integrations if we didn't have those integrations.
– Simon Iversen, Director of Product Management & Product Marketing

Engineering focus redirected to core product

With 4-5 days of maintenance per integration each quarter, the 16 in-house integrations required 13-16 months of engineering time per year - more than a full-time engineer. Migrating to Kombo freed up this capacity for core product work.

TestGorilla's engineering team can now focus on developing further differentiating features - like new assessment types, AI-powered scoring, and video-based evaluations. With Kombo's unified API, each new feature can now be rolled out across all integrated customers with a single update, rather than requiring maintenance across 16 systems.
